How To Block Out Time When Building Your New Squarespace Site

I am obsessed with Squarespace. I think it is the best web builder for many reasons, but primarily because it’s easy to use and super flexible. I am also obsessed with saving time and learning to be more efficient and better manage my time. In my free time, it’s a constant struggle (I am always late) but at work, I have this system down.

With my clients, I follow a 2-week web design process. But it can be done in as little as one weekend, if you have the proper guidance.

Time and again, I’ve seen that gathering website content is always the most time-consuming part of this process. It’s tempting to draft too much or too little content for your site, and it almost always takes longer than you think. The trick is to think about content creation as a separate project from building your website. It is preliminary work, and often the hardest part.

If you’re thinking about redoing your website, start by figuring out your content.

Your goal for website content is to find the intersection between what you want to say, and what your audience needs to hear.

…Sounds easy enough, right? Here’s how you do it:

1. Block Out The Time

Block out a 2-hour chunk of time to work on your website content. During this time, you’re going to draft your content and organize it in a way that your audience will understand.

2. Brain Dump

At the start of your 2-hour time block, sit down and visualize your audience. It could be a group of people or a single individual who might be interested in what you’re selling. Keep them in mind and write out your answers to the following questions. Don’t overthink it or edit it yet - just get the thoughts out of your head.

  • What do they need to understand about the problem you're solving?

  • In their eyes, what makes you different from similar concepts?

  • What action do you want them to take now that they know about you?

3. Identify Themes aka Headlines

Once you’ve flushed out your ideas, look back at your notes and underline 1-3 important themes that should be highlighted on your site. Next, finesse your writing into one clear headline and a 2-3 sentence description for each theme you’ve identified. Now identify the order in which these themes need to be displayed. You want your website content to be very easy for many people to read and understand, so try to keep your words as simple and straightforward as possible.

4. Pull Some Images

Lastly, pick out some images. Pull 1-4 images for each theme you identified. Whether you’re using stock photos, screenshots, or pictures from your Instagram, gather 'em up and put them all together with your new copy so it’s all ready to be placed onto your site.

Ta da! Your website content is now ready!
